The 1990s

Initially operating as the Citomed Medical Agency, the Citomed Clinic was established in Toruń in April 1992. At the time, it was a small private medical establishment whose offer included primarily home visits of general physicians and paediatricians. As of 1993, it also provided outpatient health care services at the clinic situated at Chełmińska Street in Toruń. In 1998, Citomed merged with Elana, the local polyester fibre manufacturing plant, which operated its own clinic. Elana held two-thirds of the Citomed Clinic shares and contributed to the newly established company the laboratories, the X-ray unit and the facilities located at Marii Skłodowskiej-Curie Street in Toruń. Thus, the Citomed Medical Agency was transformed into the Citomed Elana Clinic. The cooperation with Elana lasted until 2003. It was then that the company founders purchased the buildings that belonged to the plant and found a new partner - Toruńskie Zakłady Materiałów Opatrunkowych S. A., a major manufacturer of sanitary articles and medical devices from Toruń.

On 27 June 2003, the clinic was entered in the National Court Register as Lecznice Citomed Spółka z o.o. (Citomed Clinic Limited Liability Company). The company owners are natural persons and a legal entity that owns less than 25 percent of shares. The above date marks the beginning of the company’s dynamic development.

Using its own resources and EU subsidies, the Citomed Clinic modernised and expanded its buildings and equipped its clinics and laboratories with modern diagnostic devices. Owing to the PHARE programme, it was possible to purchase an ambulance, computers and endoscopic polypectomy equipment. In 2005, within the framework of the Operational Programme Enterprise and Innovation for Competitiveness, the Citomed Clinic obtained a subsidy to purchase an ophthalmic laser and a urological laser to perform operations. The equipment was installed in the operating theatre which was dedicated to one-day surgery and whose construction was financed by the company. It was under the same programme that the clinic received funds to implement the Quality Management System in compliance with the ISO 9001: 2000 standard in 2006.

At the end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011, the company used its own money to launch the Medical Imaging Unit and the Nuclear Medicine Unit, the only one in Toruń. The new units received state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment: a CT scanner, an MRI scanner and a gamma camera.

The Present

Today, the Citomed Clinic is the largest health care provider in the region in terms of the number of specialist clinics and diagnostic units as well as occupational medicine services. Over 800 businesses from Toruń refer their employees to have tests and examinations performed at the establishment. The clinic provides services for the clients of several insurance companies. The company has 170 employees and cooperates with about 250 consultants and other collaborators. Its annual income equals 33 billion zlotys.

The main premises of Citomed Clinic are situated at Marii Skłodowskiej Street and comprise 26 clinics, 12 diagnostic units and a hospital with one of the most modern operating theatres in the region. Moreover, the company operates four local outpatient clinics in Toruń and one in Lubicz. It owns three ambulances and an on-site pharmacy and conducts clinical trials.

The Citomed Clinic provides medical services for about 90,000 patients, 42,000 of whom have chosen it as their primary health care establishment. Since 2015, the company’s founders have been its sole shareholders. The continuous development of the Citomed Clinic translates into an increase in the number of private services rendered in terms of both specialist treatment and advanced diagnostics.
